Egg Rock Lighthouse

Egg Rock Lighthouse
Egg Rock Lighthouse

Egg Rock Lighthouse, constructed in 1875, stands on a small island at the entrance to Frenchman Bay, Maine, between Mount Desert Island and the Schoodic Peninsula. Its distinctive design features a square brick tower rising through the center of a hip-roofed keeper’s house, making it one of Maine’s most architecturally unique lighthouses. The light flashes red every 5 seconds and is accompanied by a foghorn sounding twice every 30 seconds. Automated in 1976, the lighthouse is managed by the U.S. Coast Guard, while the island is overseen by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as part of a bird sanctuary. Though not open to the public, Egg Rock Light is a popular sight on boat tours departing from Bar Harbor and can also be viewed from vantage points within Acadia National Park.
